How to Plan This Trip

This seven-day itinerary covers three cities on Colombia’s Caribbean coast — Barranquilla, Santa Marta, and Cartagena — traveling in a single linear direction from east to west. The recommended entry point is Barranquilla’s Ernesto Cortissoz International Airport, which receives direct flights from several US cities and major Colombian hubs. From Barranquilla you move west to Santa Marta, then continue to Cartagena, from where you can depart on the final day. This routing avoids backtracking and makes efficient use of the road connections between the three cities. All three legs are manageable by Sprinter van, intercity bus, or private transfer.

Days 1 and 2: Barranquilla

Barranquilla is the starting point and deserves two full days. On your first afternoon, walk the Gran Malecón del Río, the extended riverfront promenade along the Magdalena River that anchors the city’s urban waterfront. The Shakira monument, open-air food stalls, and river views make it a logical introduction to the city. On day two, spend the morning in Barrio El Prado, the 1920s heritage neighborhood with eclectic mansions and Art Deco architecture that reflects the city’s multicultural immigrant history. In the afternoon, move to the Centro Histórico: the Barranquilla Carnival Museum, Plaza de la Paz, and the streets around the old market district give you the historical core of the city. For dinner on either night, the restaurant corridor along Calle 93 in the Zona Norte offers the widest range of options in the city.

Days 3 and 4: Santa Marta and Tayrona

Santa Marta is approximately two hours from Barranquilla by road. On day three, go directly to Parque Nacional Natural Tayrona, the protected coastal park 35 kilometers east of Santa Marta where jungle trails connect to secluded Caribbean beaches. The most visited entry point is the Cañaveral sector. Arrive early — entry is limited and the park closes to new visitors mid-morning during peak season. On day four, take a different direction and head up into the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta to Minca, a small mountain village at 650 meters above sea level. Minca is known for birdwatching, coffee farm visits, natural swimming holes, and views over the Santa Marta bay. It is a full contrast to the coast and one of the most rewarding half-day excursions in the region. If time allows in the afternoon, walk through Santa Marta’s Centro Histórico, one of the oldest colonial centers in South America.

Days 5, 6 and 7: Cartagena de Indias

From Santa Marta, Cartagena is approximately three hours by road. Arrive on day five and use the afternoon to orient yourself in the Ciudad Amurallada — the Walled City — or the Getsemaní neighborhood immediately outside the walls, both within walking distance of all the main historic sites. Day six is the most structured: the Castillo San Felipe de Barajas in the morning with a guide (two hours minimum), followed by the Plaza de Bolívar, the Cartagena Cathedral, and the Portal de los Dulces in the afternoon. In the evening, Getsemaní offers the best concentration of independent restaurants, street art, and nightlife in the city. On day seven, book a morning boat transfer from the Muelle de la Bodeguita to the Islas del Rosario, a coral archipelago 35 kilometers offshore, for snorkeling and beach time before your afternoon or evening departure from Rafael Núñez International Airport.

Practical Notes

Barranquilla to Santa Marta takes approximately two hours by direct Sprinter van or intercity bus. Travelers in the Norte or Centro Histórico area of Barranquilla can board Sprinter services directly from the northern corridor without going to the main terminal — Berlinas del Fonce operates from Calle 93 with tickets around 45,000 COP. Santa Marta to Cartagena takes approximately three hours by the same services. For Tayrona, the park requires an entry reservation made in advance through the Parques Nacionales website — walk-in entry is not guaranteed during peak months of December through January and July through August. The Islas del Rosario boat transfer should be booked one day ahead, especially on weekends.
